Balancing the electricity market.
In order to ensure that the electricity grid always works properly, the same amount of electricity must be generated as consumed at all times. The balancing market ensures that this balance is constantly monitored and adjusted. This is important because even small differences between supply and demand can lead to outages.
Who are the players?
1. Balancing officers (BRPs).
These parties make sure that their customers (such as companies or suppliers) take as much power as they planned. If there is a difference, they are financially responsible. So they try to predict in advance as accurately as possible how much electricity will be needed and make agreements with the grid operator about it.
2. Transmission system operator (TSO).
In Belgium, this is Elia. This party ensures that the frequency of the grid (50 Hz) remains stable. If more or less power suddenly enters the grid than expected, Elia intervenes. To do this, the TSO buys reserves in advance: electricity that is quickly available as a backup.
3. Balancing service providers (BSPs).
These are companies that can help accommodate fluctuations in the grid. For example, they provide batteries, flexible production lines or other energy sources. In advance, they must demonstrate that their systems can respond quickly enough to contribute to grid stability.
How does the market work?
There are several markets where electricity is traded:
- The day-ahead market is where power is bought and sold for the next day.
- The intraday market allows power to be bought or sold until shortly before the consumption hour, if estimates change.
- The balancing market adds to this: it ensures that power production and consumption are perfectly balanced at any time of day, in real time.
Why is this important?
Thanks to these markets and the system of balancing, the electricity grid remains reliable and secure. Behind the scenes, this is done on the basis of European rules (called the Electricity Balancing Regulation), so that all countries cooperate in an equal way and exchange electricity when needed.
