Will smart charging be mandatory for private charging stations?
The Flemish Government approved on July 17, 2026 In principle, a preliminary draft amendment decree to transpose the European RED III Directive is acceptable. The proposal requires new or replacement non-public charging points—both at home and at businesses—to support smart charging: adjusting charging behavior to the state of the power grid to avoid peak demand periods.
Bidirectional charging (V2G) will not be mandated immediately. The Flemish Government will be granted the authority to implement this later, in phases, based on an evaluation by the Flemish Utility Regulator. The decree has yet to undergo the advisory process and is therefore not yet final.
Good to know: Anyone who chooses an EMS solution from Evolut-ion today is already complying with what will soon be required. Be sure to check out all the other statutory obligations.
